An Inconvenient Posting: An Expat Wife’s Memoir of Lost Identity
British psychotherapist Laura J Stephens already had the living abroad tee-shirt, and believed that another intercontinental move, this time to a country where they spoke the same language, would be child’s play. How wrong she was!
This always candid and often humorous memoir demonstrates that things don’t always go as expected – particularly with three kids in tow and an oft-absent husband. Setting up home in Houston placed Stephens in the eye of hurricane Ike, a frisky piano teacher and a crushing loss of identity as she came to terms with losing her hard-won career. Unafraid to share the truth of the ensuing depression and her recovery, this story will offer expatriates and those who have suffered similar episodes hope and inspiration. Set against a dramatic Houston backdrop, readers will find a host of good ideas that foster resilience.

I thoroughly recommend this book to any expat who is experiencing the mental difficulties involved with coming to terms with depression related to their relocation. I am an expat myself for some 19 years in two very different countries, the first time was an enjoyable breeze but the second and current one has been the most challenging period of my life with depression assailing me completely unexpectedly. Reading about Laura’s experiences has at last made me feel that I am not alone in my suffering, she writes so clearly about the processes and emotions involved yet with humour and great hope. Thank you Laura for sharing your story and for helping to show others in your position how to come through it all into a position of strength.
Lesley,
Thanks for recommending ‘An Inconvenient Posting’ to others and sharing your experience and feelings, both as an expat and reading the book. I’m so glad it has helped you to process some of the emotions associated with your latter postings. I wish you all the best for the future. Laura
[...] Thankfully, last New Year, once I had rekindled my passion for sharing my experience and how I got through that emotional crisis, I was finally able to put aside my anxieties and get stuck into finishing the book. Ten months later to my great delight An Inconvenient Posting was published (in October) by Summertime Publishing. [...]
