Jae De Wylde at her latest book signing at Waterstones, Peterborough

A note from Jae:

How incredible! I logged on to Goodreads at the weekend and there they were, sitting pretty: Sleeping People Lie at #1 and The Thinking Tank at #18 on the Best Books To Read While Travelling chart. Smashing news to tell folks at my book signing in Peterborough last Saturday!

I am delighted that so many of my readers have loved travelling with my novels. I can just see you all, perhaps curled up in front of the fire in a country cottage in Devon or lying toasting on a beach in exotic climes – or maybe just whiling away the hours in an airport or train.

But wherever my books have been your companions, near or far, I just want to say a huge thank you for tucking them into your luggage. It’s a great chart to be on, with Paris and New York (as well as good old Stamford, England) the locations for Sleeping People Lie and Rutland and the south of Spain the settings for The Thinking Tank, its lovely to know that travel-minded people have plucked them from the shelves.

Sometimes, though, lists just don’t give the full story.
Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds

Nearly a decade ago, Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds introduced the concept of and has been the authority on the experiences of “TCKs” – children who grow up or spend a significant part of their childhood living abroad. Early on, TCKs were identified as the rototype “citizen of the future.” That future is now, as more and more children are growing up among worlds, creating a culturally rich and diverse world. Rich with real-life anecdotes, Third Culture Kids, Revised Edition examines the nature of the TCK experience and its effect on maturing, developing a sense of identity and adjusting to one’s “passport country” upon return. For many third culture kids, this book will be their first opportunity to discover that they share a common heritage with countless others around the world. This expanded edition profiles the personal challenges that TCKs experience, from feelings of rootlessness and unresolved grief to struggles with maturity and identity. Highlighting dramatic changes brought about by instant communication and new mobility patterns, the new edition shows how the TCK experience is becoming increasingly common and valuable. The authors also expand the coverage to include “cross-cultural kids,” children of biracial or bicultural parents, immigrants and international adoptees – all of this bringing hidden diversity to our world and challenging our old notions of identity and “home.”

Ruth Van Reken is a second generation Third Culture Kid* (TCK) and mother of three now adult TCKs and co-author of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, rev. ed. (Nicholas Brealey) with David C. Pollock. She is also the author of Letters Never Sent, one of the first books written by an adult TCK examining the impact of his or her cross-cultural childhood. For the last twenty five years, Ruth has traveled extensively to over forty-five countries working with fellow adult TCKs, parents of TCKs, human resource people, educators, and other caregivers, about issues related to global family living. Currently, Ruth is researching how lessons learned in this TCK context may also apply to other types of cross-cultural childhoods. Ruth is co-founder and past chairperson of the annual Families in Global Transition conference. In addition to her two books and various other articles, she was written a chapter in Strangers at Home (Aletheia Publications), Unrooted Childhoods (Nicholas Brealey/Intercultural Press), and an upcoming book, Writing Out of Limbo (Cambridge Scholars Publications).

*a child who spends a significant period of time during his or her developmental years growing up in a culture outside the parents’ culture.

David C. Pollock is one of the first people to make those who grew up globally to realize they had a name and common connection with others. After living near an international school in Kenya during the 1970’s, Dave realized he was hearing many common themes from the expat children attending that school. He returned to the US and founded Interaction, International to try to be a resource for all organizations who were sending families overseas, hoping to help them deal more effectively with the challenges their children faced so they could use the gifts as well. For many years, Dave circled the globe tirelessly to spread the word of the TCK profile he had developed and the impact of transition on families. Sadly, in April, 2004, he collapsed during once such event in Vienna, Austria and died 9 days later on Easter Sunday.

Raising Global Nomads: Parenting Abroad in an On-Demand World

A lot has changed since Canadian author Robin Pascoe wrote Culture Shock! A Parent’s Guide. The world has become globalized, digitalized, and sadly, terrorized. That’s the big picture Pascoe examines in Raising Global Nomads. In her fifth book for expatriate families, the author recounts with honesty and her trademark humour what worked for her family, and shares the hard lessons learned. Parenting styles in general, and of third culture kids in particular, have changed dramatically, prompting this timely and comprehensive reexamination of the challenges of parenting abroad.

Apple Gidley, author of “Expat Life: Slice by Slice” (Summertime Publishing 2012), writes about sleepy Island Sundays in her regular blog for the UK's Telegraph.

Writing from St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, Apple Gidley is transported from the present to a memory of another time on another island… As she savours Sundays spent in Malabo, Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, we get a glimpse into the country’s religious life:

“Mass was conducted in Spanish with the singing in Bubi, the Bantu language of the island. The cathedral and cloisters opening onto the square, catty corner to the president’s place of business and a recognised palace of intrigue, was a haven of exuberant calm, if indeed those two words can be used in the same breath; the front pews taken by pious worthies intent on being seen by both the local populace and the man above.”

Read the full article in the UK’s Telegraph here.

Apple is the author of Expat Life: Slice by Slice” (Summertime Publishing 2012) and an expat columnist/blogger for the Telegraph. She has relocated 26 times through 12 different countries.

In an interview with Expat Focus, Lindsay de Feliz, author of Dominican Republic based memoir What About Your Saucepans? (Summertime Publishing 2013) chats about (among other things):

– how she went from the UK to a Caribbean island

– where she has stayed on the island and where she lives now

– how she came up with the book’s title (it’s something her mother once said)

– the hardest part of writing the book. (“Once I had written everything down it was more ‘this happened, then this happened’. I had to totally change it to ‘show not tell’. That is, I could not say ‘I was angry’, I had to show that I was angry – ‘I threw the coffee cup across the room in rage’. I had to do that throughout the book. In addition I had to put much more dialogue in, rather than just describing what happened, and at first I found that difficult too.’

– what she’s reading now

– and whether she’ll write another book!

Read the full interview here.
