Michael Hirtes, author of Going Local in Gran Canaria (Summertime, 2012), reports back to us on his book launch this weekend (Sat 24 March)…

Going Local in Gran Canaria cover 72We chose the British Club to host the launch of Going Local in Gran Canaria because we thought that the 300 members would find the book interesting. In the end, as many native Canarians attended as expats – an outcome probably related to the fact that a shop specialising in imported American and British goods refused to put up a poster advertising the event whilst El Buen Comer, a neighbourhood cafeteria where I enjoy a daily coffee and sandwich of a morning, happily agreed to.

In the end, a packed room of around 60 people listened as I read from the book and then signed copies. Contributors Liz Correal and Sheena Gallagher also treated the audience to their vignettes. My evening was rounded off with a wodge of tortilla española accompanied by a very welcome cubata (rum and coke). Check out photos of the event at Hirtes Book Launch, Gran Canaria.
Covering everything from places to see, property advice and career opportunities, Going Local in Gran Canaria is much more than a travel guide. New residents will be delighted by its accessible, humorous style and the inside scoop on what’s hot and what’s not, coming from British journalist and resident of eight years, Matthew Hirtes.
