Perking the Pansies2Perking the Pansies: Jack and Liam move to Turkey is a refreshingly candid memoir that is already turning heads. Here, Jack Scott explains why he decided to bare all.

I didn’t really see the point of writing something that didn’t represent me or how I felt about things. Sure, I wanted to be sensitive to both the country I had moved to and the people I encountered, but I also wanted to be honest. I learned so many useful lessons in one extraordinary year that it felt important to share them – and to share them as truthfully as I possibly could. I also decided to reveal something of myself, which is why the book covers aspects of my life I’ve never written about before. Writing a warts-and-more memoir can be a strenuous journey but I think it is been worth the trek. I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of complete strangers who have contacted me to say how moved they’ve been by my personal story. A recent e-mail is fairly typical:

“Dear Jack, you don’t know me but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your book. It’s just wonderful. It had me laughing out loud one minute and moved to tears the next – literally moved to tears. Please tell me you are working on the next book.”

That kind of feedback reddens the cheeks and puts lead in my pencil.
